Healdsburg Edible Food Forest
Orchard, raised beds, swales, and perennial guilds
The Challenge
Working with the property
The owners wanted their land to feed them—but the sloped, sun-baked site lost water quickly and had no growing infrastructure. They needed a system that was productive, water-wise, and genuinely beautiful.
The Solution
A landscape with a long view
We designed a layered food forest combining a young orchard, perennial guilds, and a cluster of raised keyhole beds, all supported by contour swales that slow and capture rainwater. The result is an abundant, self-supporting landscape that produces food across the seasons.
Planting highlights
- • Mixed fruit tree orchard
- • Perennial herb & berry guilds
- • Annual vegetables in keyhole beds
- • Nitrogen-fixing cover crops
Materials & systems
- • Raised keyhole beds
- • Contour swales
- • Compost & deep mulch
- • Drip irrigation
“We are harvesting fruit and vegetables from land that used to just grow weeds. Community Soil turned our slope into a working, gorgeous food forest.”
