Sonoma Stone Terrace Garden

Dry-stacked basalt terraces, steps, and planted slopes

Dry-stacked basalt stone terraces with native plantings on a Sonoma hillside garden

The Challenge

Working with the property

A steep, eroding slope made much of the property unusable and shed soil with every rain. The owners wanted level, beautiful garden space that worked with the land rather than against it.

The Solution

A landscape with a long view

We master-planned the hillside into a series of dry-stacked basalt terraces with integrated steps and planted beds. The stonework holds the grade, stops erosion, and creates a sequence of usable garden rooms that feel rooted in the Sonoma landscape.

Planting highlights

  • • Lavender & rosemary
  • • Ornamental grasses
  • • Native perennials
  • • Slope-stabilizing groundcovers

Materials & systems

  • • Dry-stacked basalt walls
  • • Natural stone steps
  • • Bluestone paving
  • • Gravel courtyard
“They turned a slope we could never use into the heart of our garden. The stonework is stunning and the erosion is completely gone.”
